You sit down to work, firmly resolved to concentrate. Three minutes later, your phone is in your hand, without your even having decided to pick it up. You tell yourself you are distracted by nature, unable to hold on, that your attention is falling apart. That is false. Attention is neither a character flaw nor a resource you lost along the way. Attention is not what we think
We speak of attention as a quantity: you have a lot or a little, like a tank more or less full. That is a misleading image. Attention is not a single gauge, it is a multi-faceted system. Directing your gaze toward what matters, holding that course over time, filtering the ambient noise, resisting what tries to divert us: these are distinct functions, which do not carry the same weight from one person to another or from one moment to the next.

What steals our attention

These are not moral weaknesses to be ashamed of. They are normal brain mechanisms, methodically exploited by the design of our tools.
Taking back the helm
Understanding these laws finally allows us to turn them around. The first lever is to work in protected time blocks, during which a single task exists. The second, more powerful than willpower, is to eliminate solicitations at the source: cut off notifications, physically move the phone away, close the tabs. You do not resist an absent temptation.
Assumed single-tasking, doing one thing at a time fully, systematically beats permanent juggling. Real breaks matter too: stepping away from the screen restores attention far better than switching screens. Finally, good news confirmed by research, concentration can be trained. A few daily minutes of attentional training, such as focusing on your breath, are enough to measurably improve focus capacity. Attention is not a fate you endure, it is a capacity you govern.
