The second still remembers the essentials. The difference is not about seriousness or time spent. It comes down to a single factor: the moment chosen to review.<\/p>\n<h2>A discovery from 1885, still poorly applied<\/h2>\n<p>We have long known that the brain forgets fast, and in a predictable way. This observation is not new, and it does not need dwelling on here. What really matters is what has been done with it, or rather what still tends to be ignored: the real lever was never fighting forgetting itself. It is not repetition as such that strengthens memory, it is the effort required to retrieve the information. When you let some time pass, part of the memory starts to fade. Retrieving it then demands genuine <strong>retrieval effort<\/strong>, and it is precisely this effort that engraves the memory trace more deeply.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, reviewing information that is still fresh costs the brain almost nothing. You retrieve it effortlessly, because it has not had time to weaken. And what costs nothing teaches almost nothing. That is the whole paradox of spacing: it works because it makes the task slightly harder, never because it makes it easier.<\/p>\n<h2>The art of the growing interval<\/h2>\n<p>In practice, optimal spacing follows a logic of <strong>growing intervals<\/strong>. You review a first time shortly after the initial learning, say a day later. Then you let three days pass before the second review. Then a week. Then a month. The guiding idea is simple: return to the information just before it is about to disappear, neither too soon nor too late.<\/p>\n<p>Building these intervals is not complicated, but it does require having on hand content that is already clear and well organized, so you do not waste time decoding a dense set of notes at every pass. The first lacked neither discipline nor motivation. They simply miscalculated the timing. All their energy was concentrated into a single night, where it should have been spread across several weeks. Reviewing at the right time, not reviewing more, is what separates knowledge that evaporates from knowledge that stays.
